So Momma was able to be herself,

Welcome back... I missed you!

Something about winter and being under the weather

for a few weeks

and the cold and short days

really sucked my energy and creativity.

But decorating the house for Valentine's Day

got me all inspired again and I am so happy to report that

I am officially out of my rut!

Brianna & Steve's Downtown Engagement Session

Brianna and I "met" virtually a few months back. She was looking for a photographer for her engagement shoot who could uniquely capture their relationship. They currently live in Florida but would be home for the holidays and so we scheduled their shoot for the day after Christmas. I am lucky enough to live in a town where Christmas is all around for the entire month of December. Literally, Christmas carols playing while you walk down Main Street and window shop. It is seriously out of a movie. I find myself falling in love with "The Christmas City" all over again every year. Brianna and Steve's wedding will have a rustic theme and they wanted to incorporate Steve being a pilot into their session, so we started the shoot at an 1800's plantation and then moved onto Downtown. They were so much fun and willing to do anything I suggested! They brought along their 2 little furbabies, and the rest, well, see for yourself...

Congratulations you guys! You rocked this shoot!

I never understood how people could treat their animals like they were people.

Letting them sleep in their bed and up on their couches, I mean, yuck how inappropriate right?

It's a dog! I never got "those" people...

that is until the day my now husband showed up at my house with a little surprise almost 12 years ago.

There are days I honestly forget this dog is not a person.

Short of speaking, he can interact with us as good as any human can.

He is loyal, a true cuddler and faithful companion.

Did I mention he sleeps in bed with us

(most of the time under my pillow)?

Has his own spot on the couch, and gives the best hugs?

He was my first real pet, and I absolutely love this guy.

We are noticing though that he is just getting very tired,

he sleeps alot, doesn't want to play often and gives us a very tired look.

I knew days like this would come, but I never knew how scary they would be.

So for now, we just love him even more, give him even more kisses,

and let him pick where he wants to sleep, even if it's right between my husband and I.

Tips on photographing your own kids...

This year was rough, it took me 3 attempts to finally get some shots of my own little "angels" that I was halfway satisfied with for a holiday card. I won't lie, there were tantrums, crying, screaming, and the kids had a hard time too ;) I made a promise to myself that next year I am hiring someone to do our holiday photoshoot. This way I won't be as stressed and can even be in some of the pictures. Sounds like a win win! But if anything, the expereince helped me plan some goals for the holidays and next year. I want to capture more of my kids' personalities and their spontaneous moments, rather than posing them perfectly and making sure they are are looking at me with angelic smiles, after all most of my favorite shots of the three of them are exactly the opposite.

With the holidays approaching and hopefully some family downtime, whether you have a fancy DSLR or a point and shoot camera, I wanted to share with you some tips on capturing those moments. The moments that we are going to want to remember...

1. Be ready! - the moments I am talking about happen so quickly, that if you have to figure out where you last left the camera, or if the battery is charged, the moment will pass by, and recreating won't work (trust me). I suggest leaving your camera in an out of the way location that you can easily access. Want to really prepare? Have one on each floor of your house!

2. Individualize - I know for me, having the perfect picture of the three of the girls together is always my goal, but this year, with the craziness of our 3 attempted shoots, I ended up with a series of 3 pictures, one of each of them, which I absolutley love. It shows how each of the girls has changed over the last year and really makes each of their personalities stand out.

3. Catch the ordinary - Is there a part of their routine that you just find adorable? Bath time photos are some of my favorites! Someting about soapy little toes!

4. Details - Focus on the little details. does your little one have the cutest dimples? Zoom in on him when he gives you that little smile that brings them out. Do they have a favorite Christmas tree ornament? Get a close-up of them holding in in their hands.

5. Perspective - Shoot from different angles, from above them, underneath them, behind them, there are plenty of ways to get creative with capturing
the moment.

6. Traditions - Capture the little things that your family does for the holidays. Does everyone hang out in their PJ's on Christmas Day? Get a shot of all your feet up on the coffeetable! Does everyone help with putting the lights on the tree? Get a shot of the stretching to reach a taller branch. Capture all your families little traditions, the things that make your family unique from others.

7. Show the flaws - Life isn't flawless...catch some of the inperfections. Did your baby make a mess in his room? Get a shot of him sitting amongst it (then properly redirect the behavior ; -) Did she put on her clothes backwards? Mismatched shoes? A few tears? These moments are precious!

I hope this has been helpful and I hope to follow some of my own advice this holiday season!

A Time to Give Thanks...

Thanksgiving is probably my favorite holiday, this year in particular, I really feel like I have a new meaning for thankfulness, a better understanding of it. It has been a year of growth for me on so many levels and learning to be grateful for even the smallest things is one thing I conquered this year, but more so, learning to be grateful for the things that are not so great. The things that come disguised as "bad" things or obstacles. I can honestly say that I am truly learning how to be thankful for even those things. So today, on this day of Thanksgiving, I am so grateful for a multitude of wonderful things including my family, my amazing kids, my health and theirs, my home, the hundreds of fabulous people I have met through this little crazy idea I had called Pix-Ology, but I am also thankful for all the little hurdles, because through them, and through the hours of racking my brain trying to solve them, or the sleepless nights, I gain insight, I become more creative, I learn, I grow, and I am challenged. For all this...I am thankful.

I leave you with this poem, and a wish for a wonderful Thanksgiving Day! Thank you all for your continued support and friendship.

Family Book

If there's one thing I struggle with, is keeping up with my own family's memories. I take tons of pictures, and sometimes I even go as far as editing a few, but they rarely seem to make it past my computer. I have made books for each of my kids, but as they get older, it just gets more and more difficult, so this year I am starting something new. I will compile all of our memories from the year into one "Family Book". Our vacations, silly moments, school activities all in one book. It will have a specific title for each book, that maybe sumarizes our year. I might even involve the kiddos in some decision making and make it even more personal for them. I can't believe how excited I am about doing this, it takes a huge weight off of me. Oh and how cool would it be then to print off copies for family members as Christmas presents! Brilliant!

A wedding, a theme, a purpose

This past weekend I had the honor to work

with two amazing people

Their wedding was beautiful,

flowers, beautiful dresses, a gorgeous bride

And a thoughtful purpose...

To raise awareness to a growing epidemic,

Autism

It was a beautiful wedding

Filled with love and heartfelt sentiments.

During the Maid of Honor's speech,

she spoke words that stuck with me

"may today be the day you loved each other the least"

I had a great time being a part of their day and wish them all the happiness in the world.

Sonnie & Rob will be making a donation to the Autism Society

from money they raised during their wedding.

Portuguese Folklore

Over the last few years,

our local Portuguese community has formed a "Rancho"

This is a dancing and musical folklore group

that dances and performs at functions

within the local Portuguese Club as well as traveling

to other Portuguese clubs and performing for them.

They have added a children's group recently

and the kids have been working so hard to perfect their dances. This past month they were a guest at

The South Rive Portuguese Club in New Jersey

and they all danced their little hearts out!

I couldn't be prouder of my community coming together to form this group and for everyone's dedication to making it a success!

Rancho clothing consists of colorful, elaborate costumes representing different regions of Portugal

The band consists of an accordion player, guitar player, Saxophone player, drummer and other folklore instruments...

Some of the men will play the Castanholas

a handheld percussion instrument

that makes a rhythmic clicking sound

The girls love being a part of this group

(despite the little one's expression)

These two have been friends since birth,

I mean it,

they are almost exactly a year apart

and inseparable!

They love each other and in the next second

are fighting like sisters.

We still get a good laugh over one of their fights when they were little

It was over an imaginary baby

and they literally were grabbing the imaginary baby

out of each others hands!

It's no wonder though these two are as close as they are...

I seem to recall their mommies taking a very similar picture

ohhhh, about 25 years ago!

Life List update #13 - Sleep outside with my girls

I am exhausted

My back hurts so bad

Spent all morning cleaning up and taking stuff down

my hair smells like a campfire

But so very worth every second...

Sat by a fire holding my babies

as one by one they fell asleep in my arms (at 2 am)

Spent much needed time with my family

and amazing friends

who always go for my crazy ideas.

Fell asleep surrounded...

And woke up when the sun peeked in our tent.

What a fun weekend!

One we'll remember forever.

Life list #13 - accomplished!

10 years later...

It's amazing that I can see the pictures of 9/11 over and over

and every time, have the same reaction

disbelief

horror

extreme sadness

and disbelief again.

We were a nation shaken

But not broken

and 10 years later, as loved ones recite the names

of all they lost that day

I am still in disbelief

and overwhelmed with sadness.

But comforted knowing

that we still are...

One nation, under God, indivisible,

with liberty and justice for all.

It's really not my thing, I tend to like the more natural approach

to my photography and not enhance photos too much,

but when I converted this one,

I just thought I would add a touch of texture

Haircuts!

Haircuts were very overdue for these little ladies
So we headed to mommy's favorite place
Gadzooks Salon
And had a nice morning with Miss Lauren

Who is just as talented as she is is sweet!

The girls had a blast,

Loved being pampered!

Just couldn't get the little stinker

to join in on the fun...

She opted to eat lollipops and run around the salon instead...

But 2 out of 3 is not bad!

And I even managed to get a few pics right outside the salon!

That was our only outing this weekend!

We were home the rest of the time,

waiting for Hurricane Irene, baking, playing games,

and watching movies.

We were long overdue for a weekend like that too!

Tomorrow school starts, and with it

lots of craziness and running around!

There have been so many exciting things going on.

I sometimes cannot even believe it!

I have met amazing clients,

I had been looking to update the site for a while,

but every time I would start I would get frustrated.

Friday's Deep thought...Time Management

If there's one thing I am struggling with these days, it's time management.

I always kind of took pride in the fact that everything was always done

by the time I sat on the couch at the end of a long day,

but these days, I am finding myself sitting down later and later

and still having that feeling that there is more I could and should be doing.

This feeling probably has nothing {insert sarcasm} to do with the fact that

my husband has taken on a more demanding job,

that my business has gotten much busier {insert cheering}

and that I still continue to work fulltime and take care of 3 kids and a house

and all the activities and social events etc.

So it leaves me wondering, is it really time management,

or are there simply not enough hours in the day for what I want to do?

Either way, I came across this blog post from Valley & Co

last night and really liked the advice that Aleah & Nick shared.

There's one in particular that really resonated with me...

and that is to know that it's ok.

That I may not get everything done and that it's ok, it will all be there tomorrow.

So how do you manage your time?

Do you have any tricks or techniques that work well in your life?

Black & White Wednesdays - Fight!

If there's one thing my kids love more than they love each other

It is they love to fight!

Constantly!

And you see...no one explained that to me me before I had kids.

I pictured them holding hands and hugging,

and sharing and whispering cute things in each others' ears

(which does happen...about 15% of the time... on a good day)

So when mommy gets out the water balloons

and explains to them

that the object is to chase each other and

pummel each other with them

they can barely contain their excitement.

It's controlled agression and they'll take it!

so we filled up about 100 water balloons,

there was a lot of giggling, and chasing, and they had such a blast!

and...

the rest...

well, is history...

Catching up!

I realized how backed up I am (personally)

when I am planning the next vacation

and I haven't even blogged the first one yet!

Early July we went on a much needed family vacation

to Virginia Beach.

No trip is complete in our family unless we find a Cracker Barrel for a breakfast stop

(I seriously will get grumpy if we stop anywhere else,

something about that gift shop and the little triangle game)

We made an overnight stop along the way

to visit our

Nation's Capital.

The girls had never been to Washington so seeing the White House was a big deal!

It was probably 97 degrees and if you have been to DC,

you know you walk pretty much everywhere...

so we did...

with the exception of the 2 littler ones who were riding pretty

in their double Jeep stroller.

Lots of stops for water ice, visiting the National Aquarium

and splashing in sprinklers and fountains

seemed to do the trick

But after many hours of sight seeing,

they couldn't wait to get back to the "big hotel"

We even found this super cool Cathedral!

The next day we packed up and headed to the beach!

The weather was fabulous during the day, but by mid afternoon {everyday}

the thunder would roll in

the skies would open up...

and we would have to run for cover...

So mommy's perfectly planned beach portrait outfits

got pushed back in the closet night after night.

Monday turned to Tuesday, Tuesday to Wednesday,

Wednesday to Thursday...

You get the picture right...

{lol I didn't, lol}

So after whining about it for a long time,

(these outfits were picked for months!)

I mean a really long time,

I eventually got over it (not really)

We found lots of other cool stuff to do

Including an awesome petting zoo

where the girls were taught how to catch chickens.

Anyone who knows me, knows my irrational fear of chickens

so being chased by my 3 children and certain family members holding chickens

was not exactly my idea of fun.

I haven't seen any youtube videos of it yet, so I think I'm safe at this point.

So long story short...

We had a great time,

We didn't get our beach picture

We are going back to the beach next month

It better not thunder and rain!

The outfits will again be packed!

Gotta give a girl credit for persistence!

Black & White Wednesdays - Baby

Remember this mommy & daddy?

I shot their maternity shoot not too long ago...

And yesterday I got to meet little Laila

And she was even sweeter than I imagined!

I am having a hard time editing this session...

I literally have to keep telling myself,

"We are not having another baby"

Something about a sleepy 8 day old baby...

With tiny perfect little lips

and little wiry hands...

I used any excuse, just to hold her :)

I remember many a nights on the nursery chair

cuddling tiny little babies...

How that time goes by fast!

One of the things that photography

has allowed me to do for my own children

is to document their growth, their achievements

and their relationships with each other.

Last year we went to feed the ducks at a local creek,

and I snapped this shot...

The minute I took it, I loved it!

So I decided, this will be our yearly summer shot of the girls...

This past weekend we had a free moment to go visit our ducky friends

And to make mommy happy, we snapped the picture

And here it is...

I love seeing how much they have grown.

It's a little bittersweet.

The girls had fun trying to mimic their pose from the previous year...

They joked and asked if I will be doing this even when they are married...

I joked back and said "of course,

and we can have your husbands in the background, a little out of focus"

Life List Update

Life List Update - # 45 -

Go fruit picking and make jars of jam with it

I must say, when I created this life list, I never realized how obsessive I am!

It has been so much fun to plan some of the things listed!

I hope to be able to cross off a few more this summer...

The fruit picking part was a blast...

We just made it to the farm before the strawberries were all gone!

Everyone was excited to make jam with our pickings!

Mommy didn't realize what a process it was...

But so totally worth it!

The jars have to set now for 24 hours...but we snuck a little out

this morning for breakfast...

seriously...the best strawberry jam I have ever had!!!

Chefs from all over the ~~Lehigh Valley~~ world came together to prepare

a most royal meal

She looked like an angel...

Truly deserving of the title, princess

We are so proud of our amazing girl!

Once a year, my parents come to visit from Portugal for a month or two.

My girls count down on a calendar until the day we pick them up at the airport

And cry for days after they leave

Then it all starts again, counting down until their next arrival

I love watching my parents do all the things with them that

they were too busy to do with me

My kids' love for my parents is unreal...

It's amazing to watch my strict, unemotional father

Break down and sob as he says goodbye to them year after year

And see how his face changes when he sees my kids each morning when they wake up

These days are priceless and I will treasure these moments...

forever

Almost makes me forget all the other things that drive me absolutely

nuts about them :)

Communicating vs. Connecting

A great friend got me a subscription to Success Magazine as a Christmas present...

(thanks Liza!)

And every month I wait for it to hit my mailbox.

I am always so excited for the little bonus CD they include

This month, Darren Hardy talks about Communicating vs. Connecting

And it totally hit home

I communicate alot

I have email, Facebook, internet everything on my phone

I get hundreds of emails a week

I communicate with my friends and family

in person, on the phone

I skype with family from all over the world

I attend meetings

I have coffee with friends

I chat with my girls when I pick them up from school

I communicate all day long...

But am I Connecting?

So I am giving myself this little assignment...

No more multi-tasking while communicating

No emailing while I am on the phone (unless I am on hold with the cable company)

No making mental to-do lists while talking to someone

I will make a genuine effort to connect with every interaction I have

This will be no easy task in a world that is flooded with a million ways

to distract yourself!

What a weekend!

A fried read my last post and said it reminded her of another blog she follows...

It was about 9:30 pm when I got her email and went straight to Kelle's blog...I immediately could relate to so much she was saying and stayed up for hours reading her story. What intrigued me the most was the title of her blog... "Enjoying the Small Things"...exactly what I had blogged about that day.

It's amazing...but focusing on the little things has an incredible effect on mood! My husband works Saturdays and is often gone before we even get up. This morning I was woken up at 7:30 by a sleepy, hair all over her face, 9 year old crying that she had a bad dream... I got to cuddle with her for about 5 minutes before the next 2 walked in within seconds of each other.

I think most Saturdays I would be annoyed... "Why can't I just sleep in one day out of the week?" But today felt different, hanging out with 3 girlies and 2 doggies (yep, we are those people who allow our dogs on our beds) in my big comfy bed just felt perfect!

So now it's 9:05 am on a Saturday morning and the sun is shining (Thank you Mother Nature) and we have already read a book, colored, made a yummy breakfast and enjoyed it together, had a dance party in the living room, and I even got to have 2 cups of coffee on the deck!

So many "little things"

Now don't get me wrong...there has already been

one altercation,

2 timeouts,

and a stubbed toe,

but we're not focusing on that ;)

Yep, she still has her binkie...I get yelled at every 6 months at the dentist...bad mommy!

So today I am grateful that I was woken up early...

imagine if I had slept in till 9:05...I would have missed it all!

being simple: a lack of complexity, complication, embellishment, or difficulty

There are days...

Where life just cannot get crazier.

When I seem forgetful

and out of sync

(like the day I totally forgot it was "bring a picture of your pet" to school day)

There are days where if the kids are fed and clean by 8pm

I am a happy girl!

Or I had 5 minutes to just cuddle with one of them

I am a very happy girl!

There are days I don't talk to my husband...

I might "talk" to him

But it consists of reminders, tasks, and other mundane things.

There are days

where I worry

If my kids get enough of ME

(then I quickly realize that they can never have enough)

There are days where I worry

that the next 9 years will go just as fast as the first

and my oldest will be 18.

There are days I worry

If I am good enough...

If I deserve it all

And where this is all taking me.

And then there are days

where a single look from my husband

tells me how much we know each other.

A hug from my daughter

tells me she understands that everything I do

Every appointment I have

Every meeting I go to

Every late night in front of the computer

is showing her that

You have to work hard for something you want

There are days

when I get the perfect shot of them

not posed or dressed perfectly

but perfectly captures their relationship

...their personality

days where life seems simple

where things fall into place

and riding bikes outside is the main activity for the day.

These days might happen few and far between

But they are the ones that keep me going

that re-energize me

that make me think that life is...

simple

I realize that by focusing on the complexity, I am totally missing the simplicity.

I want to spend more time documenting the amazement that is

living my life.

Capturing moments of nothing

and documenting my family's life...

As is...

Because at the end of the day

they keep me grounded

they motivate me to be better

and they are who I do it all for.

So for today's blogpost...

No Pictures at all

Because although pictures say a thousand words...

Sometimes words say it all too

Well, it was definitely a crazy week...

Had a fun shoot with this little guy and his Best friend...

Picked up the 'Rents from the airport

and spent a lot of time watching the kiddos spend QT with them...

Hosted an awesome Tea Party for a special 5 year old...

And made all her dreams come true by getting her a very special doll...

pheeeewww...I'm exhausted!

I came across this picture recently...

It was taken in Brazil in November of 1977

I had just turned 1

When I first saw this picture I was overcome with feelings...

For so many reasons

I was reminded of my dad's passion for photography

Reminded that he was probably around my age when he took it

Reminded of our humble life

And reminded of the remarkable resemblance to my own children

Again I was reminded of how important pictures are...

These snippets of time...are priceless!

It's moments like this one,

in between "the perfect shot"

that I sometimes find myself welling up...

She was getting pretty tired.

and her, looking up to Daddy to rescue her

is just priceless.

These are the captures

that make what I do worth it all.

Because,

In the blink of an eye...

She will be walking,

and in a fraction of a second,

She will be at prom,

and in what feels like a heartbeat,

this same daddy will be walking her down a very long aisle

and probably making this very same gesture.

So while I do like the posed pictures...

and they make me smile...
